Two Good Excuses
See? Less than a month since my last post! Didn’t I promise you? Now I just have to come through on the “more exciting” part.
I recently received notification via email that Lickety Knit has been featured on findingDulcinea, self-described as “Librarian of the Internet.” I’d never heard of this particular web guide, but it looks nice and I’m always flattered to be noticed within the large and noisy and varied knitblog world.
The one thing that confused me a bit was its description of my site, found here:
Lickety Knit is for those knitters who want a bit of sassy humor with their blog reading. Read about the author’s knitting projects, her cats and thoughts on life, and take a gander at her finished projects, photos from her travels and (of course) some pictures of her cats.
Certainly very kind, but it gave me pause because, quite frankly, I make a concerted effort to minimize the cat content on my blog. Don’t get me wrong, I love my cats, and with three of them, they play a significant role in my home life. And if they had their way, they’d be in every knitting photo I take. But I realize that they are just plain old cats, and therefore of limited interest to a general audience. (There are certain exceptions to this rule, including cats that are ludicrously photogenic and cooperative.) Worried that I had become a cat blogger without noticing, I went back to check: my cats appeared on my blog exactly once in 2007, and zero times so far in 2008. Why on earth were they so heavily featured in that description, then?
This question did not keep me up at night, but it did get me thinking about how I would actually describe the content of this blog. I’ve decided it breaks down as follows:
- 25% knitting content
- 15% sarcastic humor
- 15% self-deprecation
- 45% repetitive excuses as to why I haven’t knit or blogged much recently
The rest of this post is going to be rooted in that last 45 percent, because (and this is for real), I haven’t read a single knitting blog nor knit a single stitch in about 8 weeks. That’s my most egregious truancy ever, so it’s only right that I come up with the best excuse for it ever. Will it be good enough? You, my blog readership (or “bleadership,” as my sister-in-law calls it) will have to be the judge of that.
Let me begin by admitting that deep in the recesses of my basement, carefully tucked away in gallon-size ziplock bags, in a box inconspicuously labeled “curling irons and hair notions,” is a small treasure trove of tiny knits that I’ve accumulated over the last three years. Some were originally intended to be gifts, some were started for no reason at all, and some were made with the faint hope that I might have a use for them myself someday. (Two were started with the intention of donating them to Project Linus, and the fact that they never made it there is admittedly embarrassing and more than a little shameful.)
Hmm, I kind of made it sound above as though I was going to be dropping a series of hints that would lead you to my excuse, but I can’t imagine that there are many of you who haven’t already arrived at the correct conclusion…well, at least part of it. For the 5 percent of you who are slow on the uptake (no, you don’t have to admit who you are), I will tell you that last year at the Yarn Harlot book launch in New York, a knitter in the audience asked Stephanie whether she’d ever heard of knitting causing or aggravating severe nausea during the first trimester of pregnancy. Stephanie answered encouragingly (”yes, but I promise you it goes away”), and while at the time I was only half-listening (because I was furiously knitting away at my charity blanket square in a futile and ultimately humiliating attempt to keep up with Minty), lately I have replayed that exchange over and over in my mind in an attempt to convince myself that my favorite hobby is not lost to me forever.
Anyway, by now I’m sure all of you have figured out that I’m pregnant. Yep, thirteen weeks tomorrow. Most of you probably have not guessed that I am pregnant with twins.
I know, seriously. I don’t really know how it happened either. (The TWIN part, people. Please do not transcribe the chapter on the human reproductive system from your college physiology textbook into the comments.) This news has thrown the Lickety Knit household into happy turmoil, and in the last three weeks we have entered an agreement to buy a new house (ours, which I adore, is definitely too small for us + twins + their crap + the parade of friend and family helpers that we are lining up), put our house on the market, signed an agreement with a buyer (whew!), and begun to contemplate our lives without any sleep whatsoever. Actually, I don’t have much time left over to contemplate that, thanks to the bone-crushing exhaustion that sends me to bed at 8:15 every night.
Here they are looking vaguely less like nothing. Still, thank goodness for the tech’s helpful labels.
So that is the best excuse I can come up with as to why I have neglected my knitting and blogging and blog-reading (bleading?) duties for so long. (And Andre and Meghal, if you’re reading this, now you know why your son has had to endure the first weeks of his life without the knitted turtle I promised you ages ago. It’s coming, I swear.) I wish I could assure you that it will get better from here on out, but I can’t be certain it will. I am clinging to the hope that my nausea will subside and I’ll get at least a sliver of my former energy back, because I have twice as much knitting to do as I originally thought I would! Suddenly that little secret treasure trove of baby knits is looking mighty paltry.

Congratulations on your happy news! I have 27-year old twin sons and other moms of multiples have a special place in my heart. Good luck to you and don’t turn down ~any~ offers of help!

De-lurking to say congrats! I’m only having one, but I can say that the bone-crushing tiredness will get better, and while knitting didn’t make me nauseous, I certainly didn’t have much time for it with all the sleep I had to have. It has gotten better in my second trimester (I’m 20 weeks), so there is hope! Hang in there!

Do you know if they’re fraternal or identical, yet? (Can they even tell in-utero?)
Well, this gives a whole new meaning to second sock syndrome. Second sweater syndrome. FOURTH sock syndrome! bwahahaha! (Okay, I’m super thrilled for you. But it’s just too easy to poke fun, also. I always wished I was a twin — you have some lucky proto-kids!)

Holy crap! Congratulations to you and Matt! You are sleeping for three now, so snooze away.
For some reason, I did not see that coming at all and had to have it spelled out for me. Good luck with the house and tiny non-nauseating knits.

This is just the best best news ever! And they’re super cute. Look just like your husband :) Do we know if they are identical or fraternal? They definitely look like two sacs, but that doesn’t completely rule out identical, you know . . . Are you going to find out their respective genders? Knitters of the world want to know.

They’re 99% certainly fraternal (during the twin-revealing ultrasound they took a quick look at my ovary and saw two telltale spots where two eggs had been released). We are leaning toward not finding out the sex, but we’ll see how our willpower holds up when it’s actually an option.

Congratulations! I know you’ve heard it from many people already, but the tiredness does go away. I’m 23 weeks now and a few weeks ago I went to bed at 11pm and realized I hadn’t taken a nap all day! It was the best day ever and the end of the midday naps for me. The second trimester rocks! No insight on the third yet though.

if you cant bring yourself to knit i would be happy to send you some wee hallowigs for them… or hats, if you think there is a boy in there that would not like a bright pink baby wig…. or even if you can bring yourself to knit ill still send you some if you like, cause i love to make them.

Congratulations, Rachel! Such exciting news! Seriously, you need to get moving on the knitting more tiny outfits thing. My cousin had twins and her sister stayed with them for the first few weeks. The sister went downstairs to check on the mommy who was up nursing. She found mommy fast asleep in the rocking chair, no baby, but one boob hanging out. She couldn’t figure out if she had fed the baby and put her back to bed, or if she sat down to nurse without ever picking up the baby.

OK, I’m back. That’s fucking awesome news. The best I’ve heard all week! Don’t worry about not having enough knits. We will supply them. And baby shit? I got lots I can send you! My knitting fell off (along with eating, moving and general interest in life) during first half of my pregnancy. I didn’t even knit for B until I was about 8 mos along. Don’t worry, the kiddos will come out with or without the handknits and you will get your groove back. It’s hard to think of knitting when that curtain of sleep comes crashing down. Hang in there!

Super news! Being the mother and grandmother of twins, I can assure you that having twins is a truly efficient way of producing offspring. And taking care of twins isn’t hardly any harder that taking care of a single infant. The change from having no kids to having some kids is so massive, that one extra baby really doesn’t make much difference. It is vital, however to get them on the same schedule. I am really excited for you. Do take offers of help seriously and accept help gladly. If I were anywhere near, I would love to babysit.
SarahJanet said,
May 4, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Oh, Rachel! Congratulations! That’s so exciting. And probably a little terrifying, but mostly exciting. All my local friends who have babies I force to come to my baby laptime program at the library, but since you’re not local I can’t do that. But go check out your local library! Most run something for babies and it’s a great way to meet other moms.
Anyway, congratulations! You guys will be awesome parents.
Sarah said,
May 4, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Congratulations! Congratulations! (one for each baby)
I didn’t knit very much baby gear while pregnant – not so much the nausea/tiredness (although I was) but a tiny bit of superstition. Now, with an 8-week-old, I wish I’d done a whole bunch more because there’s not really any time/way to knit now. But I’m sure this will pass, and I’ll wish that my baby would sleep on my chest (like she’s doing now) even if it meant I couldn’t knit over her :).
Best of luck with your pregnancy! Have fun growing those babies.

Woohoo!! You and your sweetie must be over the moon!
As a fellow mother of twins, you have so much to look forward to. Everyone thinks it is so hard to handle (which you should totally milk, btw) but it is a breeze. You get everything over with at once (holding a bottle, potty training….) and the fellers’ come into the world with an automatic playmate. No need for you to constantly entertain them!

Apparently I read Elinor’s 2nd comment too quickly, and too soon after having read Sonya’s, because I totally read her 4th sentence as “Don’t worry about not having enough tits.” Which I thought a very strange response to someone’s news of twins. Triplets, maybe, but twins, no.
Anyway, congrats and best wishes! I’m thrilled for you. :)

p.s. You might want to ask for whatever drugs Mary Ann and Amy got when they had their twins b/c Dude. I so would not have used words like “breeze” and “hardly any harder than taking care of a single infant” to describe my own experience with twins.
Which is not to say that I wouldn’t do it all over again. In a heartbeat.

I agree with earthchick… my twin girls are now 8 1/2 and I would not describe those early days as a “breeze” at all!
I remember being trapped on the couch with my two teeny babies on the double nursing pillow, each one having fallen asleep after nursing. And me, sitting there for hours, having to pee SO badly! But not daring to get up for fear the crying would start all over again.
But it was all SO incredible, and worth every moment of it. And I, too, would do it again in a heartbeat. You are SO, SO lucky. Congrats!
(And just think of how RIPPED you will be from carring two babies all over the place! Your upper body will be amazing!)

I’m a bit sad that you chose to blog about this when I was out of town and had very limited internet access so I couldn’t be among the very first to comment. (I’ve been blog-stalking you waiting for this post. But then I blog-stalk you constantly, anyway.)
BUT I am still THRILLED about the twins (and smug like Minty, though not as smug since you told *her* first). I apologize for voicing my love for twins in front of you, causing you to describe your abject terror of having twins, which most certainly caused your ovaries to release two eggs as some sort of joke. Apparently I wasn’t specific enough. I was hoping for identical twins.
Congratulations again to you, Matt, and the young ‘uns!

I had to give up knitting and blogging entirely because I was throwing up all of the time and the nausea was really intense. I will say at week 15, it was like someone flipped a switch and all of a sudden the nausea and throwing up ceased and I felt like myself again. I feel like I have more energy now too. Imagine my disappointment when all I got was a few pictures of my daughter’s uterus hosting two creations that are only minimally grandchild-like despite the fact that Rachel has spent 24/7 for weeks and weeks on this latest project. Guess I’ll have to make the best of it; at least I’ll soon have other situations in which to say, “Girls/boys/children, you’re BOTH pretty!” And maybe someday my dream will come true and Cory will start his own blog. Love you, Rachel! Love you, twinlets!

Well it’s about time you had a proper excuse for not blogging more often!
I’d say this counts as one. A huge congratulations, I’m really pleased for you both.
Fingers crossed the nausea goes away soon and you can get down to some serious knitting. Just think of the double-whammy on cuteness.

Congratulations! I’m also expecting (now at 13 weeks) and have been exhausted by my one baby-to-be, I can only imagine how you feel with two on the way! I do hope your ability to knit comes back because I’m sure you’ll be knitting up some gorgeous things for the twins.

Congratulations, how fun two for the price of one. Don’t worry you will feel better soon. Have fun knitting!

I’m a bit slow on the draw here, but woo-hooooooo! Congratulations, Rachel.
Very happy for you and the expanded family-to-be! It’ll all come in stride, no matter how scary it all seems now.
Beautiful news!

[...] Knit is such a fine, fine blog, and the twins-expecting Rachel is just wonderful. I admire her ability to create an almost tangible circle of friends. [...]

Wow! Twins! You must be thrilled to bits. My cousin just had twins and they are the most beautifal, precious things on earth….but expect no sleep for, ooh, about 5 years!

Coming out of lurkdom to say “congratulations!” You can see how far behind I am on my blog reading. ;)
I have 12-yr old twin girls (non-identical) so I know what you’re going through (and what you are in for — hah!). Twins are a lot of work (especially the first 2 yrs), but also so wonderful.

Well I’m glad I’m starting to catch up when there’s good news like this to read! I offer twice the congratulations as normal (perhaps even more than your recommended daily allowance!)

Jimmeny Cricket! I leave the blog-o-sphere for a while and come back to the news your pregnant! Congratulations! And to twins, no less. Wow! You’re in for a very busy time by the sound of it. Good luck!!! (and just because I’ve not been reading much or responding as I used to, doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking about you lol. Just FYI ^_^)

103 comments already. Can’t really claim that I’m the quickest either. :D Oops, I’m just realizing that your blog entry is 4 months old… :o Ok, since you’re the mother of all excuses it probably won’t be necessary for me to come up with mine. :D
Anyway, these are awesome news and I hope you will overcome your nausea and be back soon! :)
